Gifty

Family members are thoughtful enough to give me bookstore gift cards every year -- or they simply hate shopping for me that much -- and I've just started making up my gotta-buy list with Dean Koontz's Forever Odd and Monica Jackson's Mr. Right Now as my first two picks. I may not be able to wait three weeks for Monica's, although I know it means I have to venture into the damn Fic/Lit section at BAM to get a copy.

For gifts, I'm wrapping up a bunch of my favorite reads from 2005: The Priest of Blood by Douglas Clegg, Talyn by Holly Lisle, Cold Granite by Stuart MacBride, and Dark Lover by J.R. Ward.

What book(s) are at the top of your wish list this holiday season, and/or what book(s) are you buying as gifts for others?

Looking at my to-be-bought list, I see Meg Cabot's got a new YA series coming out. The first title is Avalon High.
As heavy a reader as I am, the above mention book seems to be the only one I'm waiting for in Dec. Unless your publisher is willing to let me buy Rebel Ice early.
    Any chance?

  3. Top of my wish list is Talyn. Then there's Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynn Truss. I'm also interested in Robin Hobb's Shaman Crossing, but I'm hoping it'll come out in paperback one of these days.

  4. This Christmas I'm going to be introducing people to the Darkyn series.

One good turn and all that ;}#

For myself, I quite fancy Tambo's Threads of Malice.

Top of my wish list is Pride and Prejudice and Sanctuary (as soon as it gets out of hardback). I've had to keep my list short this year as I'm still working my way through the box of old books my dad is letting me borrow.

As for gifting books, I'm actually only giving one book this year. Usually I have to give up and do a gift card (my family members have an annoying habit of buying books too quickly for me to get ahead of them), but I lucked out this year: David Weber is going to be at PhilCon this weekend. *-* So I'll be picking up an Honor Harrington book and having it signed for my dad (who owns every single Weber book and has made this present a "duplicate," despite my best efforts *~*). Can't say he'll be reading it, but it's still a book. *-*

I have pre-ordered several books as gifts, Rebel Ice, the new Marjorie Liu book Shadow Touch, and Unleash the Knight by Sherrilynn Kenyon. If they don't arrive prior to Christmas, there will be a note inside a card notifing them that they will be given as soon as they arrive.

  7. Holly Lisle's Talyn, Stuart MacBride's Dying Light, Lynn Viehl's Darkness Has No Need, J.R. Ward's Lover Eternal, just for starters! I do have Odd Thomas, haven't read it yet. It's on the TBR pile.

  8. This year, my husband is getting Son of a Witch by Maguire, my mother is getting Forever Odd by Koontz, and my daughter is getting Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. A friend of mine is getting a period replica book on hosting and house-keeping that I think she will find amusing.

For myself, I'm hoping for Howl's Moving Castle by Wynne Jones(loved the movie, wanting to read the book now), Locked Rooms by King, and Mark Twain's Helpful Hints for Good Living: A Handbook for the Damned Human Race by Twain, because you can really never have too much Twain in your life. Or Frost, but I failed to ask for a book of poetry by him, so I'll have to get one of those on my own.

    Cheers!

  9. I buy so many books as it is, that I've never thought to ask for books for Christmas. But if I did ask for books this year on the top of my list would be Comanche Moon by Catherine Anderson and Madeline Baker's older historicals.

  10. For my oldest daughter, the last of the W.I.T.C.H. books, I think there are three she doesn't have. For my youngest, strawberry shortcake picture books and maybe I'll try to find a beginning chapter book for her.

For my mother-in-law, a gift card.

Those are the only ones on my list who read. I've been getting everyone books anyway for the last two years, but this year I figured I should try to get them something they'll want instead. *sigh*

Having a book wish list is a complete waste of time. No one buys me books. But if they did, The elements of Style illustrated would be nice, and some mysteries by authors I haven't discovered yet.

My dad is getting a Garrison Keillor book.

My boyfriend is getting a bunch of martial arts books and an anatomy book (the better to hit the appropriate pressure point/joint - so fun for me).

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can finish off my Dorothy L. Sayers collection, add a couple more to my Mercedes Lacky, and I'm waiting for Mr. Right Now and Bitten and Smitten.

  12. Well, I have a wishlist on Amazon.de, but no one of my family ever looks at it. :-)

    Currently listed:
    GRR Martin, Feast of Crows
    Guy Gavriel Kay, Fionavar Tapestry
Rebecca Gablé, Die Hüter der Rose (historical fiction, War of the Roses time)

What I definitely get for Christmas:
    GG Kay, Tigana
GG Kay, A Song for Arbonne
    Dorothy Dunnett, King Hereafter
Daniel Kehlmann, Die Vermessung der Welt (a novel about Gauss and Humboldt)
    the second Darkyn book

Usually my parents got books for Christmas, but my father doesn't read much so shortly after my mother's death. He misses the talks he had with her. So it's a CD for him this year, because he listens to music a lot right now.

My brother has no time for reading, but my 14 year old nephew will get a book. I'm just not sure what. He reads stuff like Harry Potter and Otori saga, but also Ivanhoe and Quentin Durward. I thought about His Dark Materials, but I think it's too slow for his taste. Unfortunatley, most of Rosemary Sutcliff's books are out of print in German translation. Well, maybe I'll get him an "adult" one, some nice, fast paced adventure thingie like Simon Scarrow's Eagle books (which are avaliable in German).

  13. Forever Odd is at the top of my list. It's sort of become a Christmas tradition for me to get the newest Koontz hardcover. But I'm especially looking forward to Forever Odd since I loved the first book featuring Odd.

Nobody in my family usually wants books for Christmas, but I still might slip one or two in there. We'll see how it goes. Obviously I waiting till the last minute. (What else is new?)

  14. My ten year old nephew is getting "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper, and "Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle.

My five year old nephew is getting "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen.

And my three year old niece is getting "How do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?", also by Yolen.

They're either going to love me or hate me in years to come. ;)

    Dressing The Galaxy.

A book about the costumes from Star Wars.wasn't wild about the movie but the costumes are works of art in the new movies.

Eyeing some silversmithing books too. I generally ask for all the non fiction since I can afford all the paperbacks any time, but this year, I haven't really come across any must haves.

  16. For the wine buff, The Botanist and the Vintner; for the wannabe fashion designer, a book on figure drawing for fashion design.

For me, Melusine by Sarah Monette, the only hardcover this year that I desperately had to have, besides textbooks. Aside from that, since I'm moving soon, I'm trying not to accumulate too many books.

  17. I always buy books for people at Christmas. Not everyone gets a book. This year, my 12yo niece gets Kim Wilkin's Witchsong, and Children of the Lamp, Blue Djinn by PB Kerr. My 3yo niece is getting the Dr Seuss pop-up book. I've got The Accidental Foodie by Neale Whitaker for my mother; and for me, (insert snicker) I've got Last Girl Dancing, Private Demon and Kim Harrison's The Good, The Bad, and the Undead.

I can also look forward to some book tokens. Thems is gonna be used for Tamara Siler Jones's books. Woot!

  18. The Priest of Blood by Douglas Clegg, Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward, Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas, Catspell by Colleen Shannon, Deep, Dark & Dangerous by Jaid Black, Shadow Touch by Marjorie Liu, Unleash the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Master of Wolves by Angela Knight. Whew! That's only half the list. *ggg*

  19. I'm looking for books on the history of fire-fighting and/or EMT work for one of my sisters currently in training.

For myself, I'm moving from WA to PA this month, so I'm asking for books on tree and plant identification for PA and the surrounding region.

  20. I got The Jump by Ian O'Connor for #1 son-it's non-fic and about basketball. I'm hoping it'll do more than collect dust. I just bought #2 2 more Lemony Snicket books but he wants all the Narnia books too (bless his reading heart-he'd read anything I bought him).

For myself--Koontz is an autobuy and I'll probably get it for my nephew too since hes' a Koontz fan. The other nephew does not read *sigh*

Otherwise, I just bought a stack so I don't see me getting any new ones for a while. I'll probably get a couple of friends gift cards for books *g*
